Boylestone is a small scattered rural community on the southern boundary of the Derbyshire Dales in the midlands of England. Whilst these days many residents work away from the village in a wide variety of occupations, farming still plays a significant part. There are dairy farms together with arable and at times the human population is substantially outnumbered by sheep and lambs. There are two places of worship: the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist and a Methodist Chapel. The latter was originally Primitive Methodist until the Methodist reunion. It boasted the first Primitive Methodist Day School in the country although this has been long closed. The village also had a Church of England Day School. This also closed some years ago and the building is now the Village Hall. Children from the village attend the Church Primary School in Church Broughton and then go on to secondary education in either Etwall or Ashbourne. The other public meeting place is the Rose & Crown the village pub.The village has an active community with various activities. Whilst neither Church nor Chapel has its own choir, the Boylestone Singers, which consists largely of villagers, sing on special occasions and at festivals in both as well as going on occasion to perform elsewhere. The Parish Church has an active congregation. Sunday Services alternate between Holy Communion according to the Rite A form of the Alternative Services Book and Morning or Evening Prayer according to the Book of Common Prayer. We are fortunate in having a panel of four church organists who share the duties between them.
Our group of parishes are all in the county of Derbyshire in the midlands of England near triangle formed by the city of Derby on the east, the A52 Derby to Ashbourne Road on the north the A50 (Derby) to Uttoxeter Road on the south, and the A516 (Lichfield) to Ashbourne Road. Radbourne on the east is very close to the Derby suburb of Mickleover whilst Boylestone on the west is some 10 miles from Derby as the crow flies (although the English lanes go further round!). The churches are roughly on the perimeter of an oval some 10 miles E-W diameter and 5 miles N-S diameter with Church Broughton on the SW.
